2011年3月11日に起きた東日本大震災から約100日経った6月22日、被災地ボランティアとして、宮城県へと向かった。被災した各市には、ボランティアセンター（以下VC）が設置されており、ボランティア希望者は当日の朝に直接VCへ行き、受付を済ませ待っていると、活動地が順番に割り当てられる。主な作業は津波の被害を受けて半壊した家屋の泥だし、家財搬出、掃除全般。家の持ち主からの依頼があって初めて活動することができる。日々時間に追われながらニュースで見る被災地の様子と、実際に現地へ行き、自分の目で見て活動することは全く違う。そのことを本当に強く感じた。家屋内は、3ヶ月前の津波による被害がそのまま残っていた。泥まみれになったモノを拾うたびに家族の生活の様子が想像できる。冷蔵庫などには海水がまだ残っていて、腐敗した異臭がする。毎日活動するボランティアさんたちは、次々と片付けていく。その様子を家の持ち主の夫婦が見ているという感じだった。猛暑の中、20人体制での片付け作業だった。朝もらった、台湾からの水。その次の日、雨でVCでは活動できないので、電車とバスを使い、石巻市へと向かった。鉄道はまだまだ再開できる様子にないので臨時バスが運行している。津波の被害が大きかった石巻市。川はヘドロ化して異臭を放っていた。バックパックを背負いながら歩いた街。一般人は誰一人歩いてはいなかった。自分の家に来て、何かを探している人、周囲ではインフラの整備をする作業員がいるくらいだ。全壊した家跡や半壊した家屋、原型をとどめてない車などを見ていると、“tunami”の威力を恐れる事しかできない。まだまだ復興には時間がかかるだろう。街を歩いているとどこにでもあった、“がんばろう東北！”“営業再開しました！”の文字。まだ避難所生活を送る8万人以上の人々。様々な問題。世界各国からの多大な支援。人々は決してあきらめてない。自分ができることは何なのか。この2日間で、一生に二度とあってほしくはない現実を見たことを、忘れてはいけない。
